Sacramento, CA – March 7, 2008 – Helios Tech presented a session
on "The Role of Technology in K-12 Improvement and Compliance" at the Charter Schools
conference 2008 here at the Sacramento Convention Center. The presentation proved
useful for the charter schools in attendance in guiding their technology efforts
in the right direction.
Compliance reporting is a big pain for schools, with increasing regulation from
local to the federal level. Bigger public school districts with relatively larger
budgets are able to devise tools and hire staff to deal with the mountain of work.
However, charter schools being smaller need support so they can effectively meet
compliance needs. Helios relieves charter schools of this pain.
The session was presented by Yash, who focused on technology. "We wanted the attendees
to glean some insights into harnessing technology for their school improvement and
thats why one of our presentation highlights was the 10 ways to make technology
work for your school," explained Yash.
Co-presenter Sharlene presented a case study of Compton Unified and how she and
others in the district used data management technology to significantly reduce reporting
time and improve compliance. The presentation also incorporated what the Helios
team learned from working with schools such as High Tech High and Camino Nuevo Charter
Academy.
The session included technology funding resources and ways on making technology
work for charter schools. It drew material from Stanford Research Institute's research
in 2002 on Teacher Information System as well as from various other studies.
Tom Tafoya, director of business and technology at Visions in Education, liked the
10 points included in the presentation. Among the many questions, one of the attendees
asked if Helios could do state reporting as well as on-demand reporting which led
the presentation into a live demo of what Helios is capable of.
