Long Beach, CA – March 11, 2009
– Charter School Conference attendees took away useful information from a workshop on "Technology Solutions for HR and Compliance Reporting". The workshop presented by Helios Tech focused on how technology can help tackle the arduous tasks of generating reports and managing HR data. The conference is attended by representatives of charter schools all across California - a state that has one of the highest charter school population at 621 charter schools.
The workshop included topics such as recommendations-driven evaluations. Helios suggests that if the teachers, administrators, and the school work in tandem to help teachers attain effectiveness, the exercise can yield more than just paperwork. This is called a recommendations-based, collaborative model. Such a model will help schools plan effectively for professional development and foster overall improvement. Participants walked away with a free evaluation rubric created by Helios Tech based on this model.
Completed evaluations can yield very useful results. Once aggregated, an evaluation summary can show which elements or recommendations were cited the most for all teachers together. Then the school can plan professional development to address these frequently cited recommendations. The workshop covered professional development tracking as well.
Compliance reporting is a big pain for schools, with increasing regulation from local to the federal level. Bigger public school districts with relatively larger budgets are able to devise tools and hire staff to deal with the mammoth tasks. However, charter schools being smaller need support so they can effectively meet compliance needs. Helios relieves charter schools of this pain.
Presenters illustrated their concepts through case studies of prominent charter schools that Helios Tech has worked with. The studies covered what these charter schools did and the benefits they received from a technology-driven HR management strategy. Thanks to these strategies, the charter schools were able to
able to share information and knowledge across different people and schools and that also helped them go through WASC accreditation and audits.
Participants also got a chance to see the demo of Helios along with its latest 2009 features of electronic document management and the new QEIA reports. "This looks like a very useful tool for complete HR management and is a must-have for us charter schools," commented a participant from ICEF charter schools.
The session included technology funding resources and ways on making technology work for charter schools. It drew material from Stanford Research Institute's research in 2002 on Teacher Information System as well as from various other studies.
