San Diego, CA – October 15, 2009 – Lisa Loop, co-director of teacher
education at Claremont Graduate University and Yash Sharman of Helios Tech presented
a collaborative workshop on using 21st century technology to assess and improve
student teachers. Speaking at the fall 2009 conference of the California Council
on Teacher Education (CCTE), Loop demonstrated how teacher education is being transformed
with the help of online analytical tools that help track student evaluations
and identify trends in performance.
Loop presented empirical work on various factors influencing student teacher retention
and performance as well as how and to what degree these factors affect performance.
Loop showed that teacher preparation variables have the strongest predictive power
for teacher retention and success. In fact, teacher preparation affects retention
and success by as much as 36%. School support also has a major impact on how well
the teacher does and how long he/she stays in the profession.
Claremont has been using Helios Tech’s online assessment model to track student teacher
data as well as assess and analyze student performance. Helios enables real-time
analysis of this data, which in turn, facilitates ideas on improvement. For example,
summary reports aggregating faculty's online assessments can tell Claremont which
specific areas its students need improvement and further coaching.
Facilitating an interactive session with participants from several universities,
the workshop presenters demonstrated the efficacy of rich features of Helios such
as real-time analytical reporting, student assessment rubrics, and data management.
Participants took away many tips from this presentation. "This system of online
assessments and analysis is certainly helpful in addressing diverse student needs
because the current system just blinds us to what problems the students are having,"
commented a participant from a Northern California university who did not wish to
be named. One participant who directs a teacher education program asked how can
a faculty advisor benefit from data if the reports only offer a static view. The
answer was that there is also the ability to create ad-hoc reports in which faculty
can include different data elements for analysis.
The CCTE holds its conference twice a year and brings together leaders and thinkers
in teacher education. Held in San Diego along the beautiful oceanside resort, the
conference focused on the theme of "21st Century Schools of Education: Responding
to a Changing World".
